During a conversation with a current college student, I mentioned that I was an athletic director, which excited them. They said it’s the career path they want to pursue, and it looked super fun. Instantly, I smiled as big as Donkey in Shrek!
Almost everyone says it looks like so much fun. However, a lot of work behind the scenes contributes to that fun. All that work isn’t always exciting. While games, championships, and the kids’ experience are all rewarding, you are the engine that drives the whole process.
Officials do not show up at games alone; they must be scheduled. Buses do not appear magically; they must be scheduled. You must lead and manage coaches, create procedures, ensure compliance, build positive relationships with student-athletes, staff, parents, and the community, maintain facilities, etc. All of this to get to GAME DAY! Just for a game? The answer is more complex than that, but yes, leading a robust athletic department reflects on game days tied to all the work done when no one is watching.
Athletic director circles say the job is all day, all duties, and all details. You do everything you are asked to do, and then some, and your phone rings any time of day (I’ve had 11 PM calls). “AD” also means always delivering. We, as athletic directors, figure it out. We deliver. We are like MacGyver; we make a telephone from a stick and wire. That’s what we do! Knowing you always have to think of a contingency plan is a unique skill set. You must always consider what could go wrong and what should go right. I love being an Athletic Director, not because of all the fame and glory that comes with it (that’s a myth), but because of all the intricate details that make game days happen, put a smile on spectator’s faces, and allow the coaches and kids to shine.
To all aspiring athletic directors, yes, it is fun, but remember, you are the engine behind it. It is one of the most fulfilling careers, and I love every minute of it! It is a responsibility of service to many people, and honestly that contributes to the fun!
